Kicks in Self-Defense

Kicks are nice to have and can add another dimension to your game. But the natural weapons of the body are the hands and elbows. The legs play two main purposes for the body... stability and mobility. If you are sacrificing either one of these in order to try to use your legs as a weapon, you're putting yourself in unnecessary danger. Remember that we are training for self-defense, not for a match. Adding more dimensions to your game isn't what realistic self-defense is about. It's  about responding efficiently to a sudden attack, without having to think. Should you know what to do when someone else tries to kick you? Of course, but if realistic self-defense is your main goal, learning how to kick shouldn't be high on your priority list.
