The Truth and Nothing But the Truth
If you want to learn about what works and what doesn't on the street, then you must understand the truth and nothing but the truth. The truth about martial arts isn't how things appear to be on TV/Movies. It isn't what people generally accept to be true either. It also isn't what you learn from watching Ultimate Fighting Champions or other sports competitions. The truth is exactly how it is. Either you accept the truth or your misconceptions will naturally work against your when your life depends on it.
I have a friend that spent years getting one achievement after the next. I'll admit, I used to wish I could be more like him. He got one thing after the next and I thought how in the world did he ever have time to do it. His resume of achievements was amazing to say the least.
A few years ago, after losing touch for a while, he sought me out. He was never one of those guys that sought out other people. He always was the one others sought out. I was surprised to say the least. Although we went back a ways, when I heard his voice on the phone, I thought I was in for another one of those show and tell days again. You know the one's where you listen and say "oh wow, thats great" and really you're thinking "this sucks".
Strangely enough, my friend called to seek my advise. I was floored. He wanted to know more about Advanced Fighting Concepts and the philosophy behind it. He knew I always talked about how my approach to martial arts was much more than just fighting skills but this is the first time he actually opened up to me and told me that he couldn't allow himself to believe that. I finally was able to tell him how much my training in martial arts has changed the way that I view the world and how its helped me to overcome challenges by using the principles I practice in Advanced Fighting Concepts.
I really think that day was a breakthrough for him... a big step in the right direction. And it was for me too. To be able to share something that has helped me so much with a friend is so authentic. For him to be honest enough with himself to seek my help was one really remarkable. I know I can't show him the truth. He's gotta find it on his own. Truth in anything is found by first being real with yourself. Noone can truly show you the truth. Its found on your own. It also isn't found through achievements. This is false truth. Truth is found in how honest you are to yourself. Its found through your failures and weaknesses.
